The head is the highest, most sacred part of the body in Thai spiritual belief. It is the seat of the spirit and must not be touched — regardless of how affectionate the intention.

• Never touch someone's head — even a child's, even playfully.
• Do not pass objects over someone's head.
• Try to keep your head below elders or monks where context allows.
• Never step over someone who is seated or lying — walk around.

The feet are the lowest and most impure part of the body. What they touch and what they point at matters — particularly in relation to people, sacred objects, and the monarchy.

• Never point your feet at people, monks, Buddha images, or altars.
• Do not rest your feet on tables, chairs, or elevated surfaces.
• Step around food and people — never over them.
• Never step on currency: Thai banknotes carry the King's image.
• Remove shoes before entering temples and most Thai homes.
