Physical Hierarchy · Body Language
Thai culture assigns a spiritual hierarchy to the body. The head is sacred; the feet are impure. Understanding this changes how you behave in everyday situations.
The head is the highest, most sacred part of the body in Thai spiritual belief. It is the seat of the spirit and must not be touched — regardless of how affectionate the intention.
The feet are the lowest and most impure part of the body. What they touch and what they point at matters — particularly in relation to people, sacred objects, and the monarchy.
Criticising or insulting the Thai royal family is a criminal offence punishable by 3 to 15 years imprisonment per count. This law applies to foreigners equally and has been enforced against tourists. Social media posts made outside Thailand are within scope.
"Thai belief holds that spirits reside in thresholds. When entering a temple or home, always step over the threshold, never on it."
