Organization is Key 2026
Relocating to Thailand is rewarding, but the final weeks are where costliest mistakes happen. This guide covers everything you need to action before closing your UK door.
Thailand's bureaucracy runs on originals and certified copies. Beyond your passport, several new digital requirements are now strictly enforced as of 2026.
Do not assume 6 months is enough. For long-term stays, immigration frequently checks for 18 months of validity from your date of entry. Renew your UK passport now if needed.
Mandatory from May 2025. You must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 72 hours before arrival. Submitting outside this window is not possible.
Required for spouse-based visas and marriage registration in Thailand.
Essential for Non-OA (Retirement) visas and certain professional permits.
Must be certified by a solicitor if you intend to work or volunteer.
Detailed letter for any chronic medication. Some UK drugs are controlled here.
The Visa Reality
Tourist & DTV visa holders are now blocked from opening Thai bank accounts at major institutions (SCB, K-Bank). If banking is critical, you must arrive on a qualifying long-term visa (Non-OA, Non-O, or Elite).
Moving your life by sea takes 5-6 weeks. As of January 2026, new tax rules apply to every imported item.
The de minimis exemption (1,500 THB) was abolished. From 1 January 2026, **all imported goods** are subject to import duty and 7% VAT from the first baht of value. Working with an experienced Thai freight forwarder is no longer optional.
5 — 6 Weeks
Standard for house moves & bulky furniture.
7 — 14 Days
Urgent boxes & high-value electronics.
Pro Tip
Thailand's humidity warps leather and destroys books. Clean and seal everything for ocean transit.
Setting up your financial structure in the UK is the single most important preparation step. Attempting this after arrival introduces months of friction.
Set up international transfer accounts before you deregister from your UK address. You need these operational from Day One.
Legally notify HMRC that you are leaving. Crucial for non-resident tax status and pension protection.
"Kasikorn Bank (K-Bank) remains the most accessible for expats, provided you hold a long-term visa."
Action these items in order. Check them off as you go.
