Licences, Roads & Vehicles
International permits, Thai driving licences, road rules, and buying a vehicle. Everything you need before you get behind the wheel.
Driving in Thailand without a valid licence invalidates your insurance entirely. In the event of an accident you are personally liable for all costs. An international driving permit from your home country is valid for 90 days. After that, a Thai licence is required.
The Thai driving licence process is simpler than most expats expect. The theory test is available in English and the practical assessment is straightforward. Most expats complete the process in a single day at the local Land Transport Office.
Valid for 90 days in Thailand. Obtained from your home country's motoring authority before you leave. The AA or RAC in the UK issue these on the spot.
A multiple-choice test on Thai road rules and signs. Available in English at the Land Transport Office (DLT). Most expats pass first time with 30 minutes of preparation.
A short practical test at the DLT. Colour vision, reaction time and a basic driving assessment. Straightforward if you have driving experience.
Valid for 2 years initially. Renewed for 5 years thereafter. Requires proof of address, visa documentation and your international permit or foreign licence.
Bring originals and photocopies of everything. The DLT will take copies but you need to present originals for verification. Arriving prepared avoids a second visit.
Valid passport with current visa
International Driving Permit OR foreign driving licence
Proof of address in Thailand (utility bill or rental contract)
TM30 receipt (landlord registration document)
2 passport photographs
Medical certificate (obtainable same day from local clinic, approximately 50 THB)
The DLT offices in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket all have English-speaking staff. Arrive early — queues build through the morning.
Thailand's vehicle market is well-developed. New car prices are competitive by Western standards. Second-hand options are plentiful. Monthly rental is the sensible first-year choice.
30,000 — 80,000 THB
Honda Wave or PCX 150 are the expat standards. Second-hand market is active. Thai licence required — no exceptions.
500,000 — 1,200,000 THB
Toyota, Honda and Isuzu dominate the market. Finance available with proof of income. Import duties make foreign cars significantly more expensive.
150,000 — 500,000 THB
Strong second-hand market particularly for Toyota Fortuner and Honda Jazz. Get an independent mechanical inspection before buying.
8,000 — 20,000 THB/month
Sensible option for first year before committing to purchase. Insurance typically included. Avoids depreciation and maintenance exposure.
Road tax and insurance: Compulsory third-party insurance (Por Ror Bor) is mandatory and costs approximately 600 — 1,200 THB per year. Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended and costs 8,000 — 25,000 THB annually depending on vehicle value.
