3 March 2026
Commemorates 1,250 disciples spontaneously gathering to hear the Buddha. Candle-lit temple processions (wien tian) occur nationwide after dark. A deeply attended holy day.
22 May 2026
The most important Buddhist holiday — the triple anniversary of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death. Government offices close. Temple visits are at their annual peak.
11 July 2026
Commemorates the Buddha's first sermon. Marks the start of Buddhist Lent the following day. Many men who are entering the monkhood do so on or immediately after this date.
12 July 2026
The beginning of Buddhist Lent — the three-month Rains Retreat when monks remain at their temples. Traditional Thai weddings are not held during this period.
8 October 2026
The end of Buddhist Lent. Coincides with the Thod Kathin period when special merit-making ceremonies are held at temples.
12 July – 8 October 2026. Traditional Thai weddings are typically not held during Phansa. Many Thai men also enter the monkhood temporarily during this period. Guest attendance at ordination ceremonies is welcomed for close friends.
